There are the obvious covers I haven't mentioned, like Linda Ronstadt's hideous string of 70's remakes of Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, the Stones, etc, etc, but I'm assuming anyone reading this list already prefers the originals, so I didn't bother including Ronstadt's mewling, vastly inferior, yet infuriatingly bigger-selling travesties. The same goes for Elton John's twinkley version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", Donna Summer's galloping cover of "MacArthur Park" (Richard Harris' 1968 original is no masterpiece to begin with), Aerosmith's grotty take on "Come Together", Hall & Oates overblown reading of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", Grand Funk Railroad's 70-mile-an-hour rear-ending of Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion" (which I actually sort of like), the Carpenter's comatose crooning of "Please Mr Postman", or any other sentimentalized, spinning-in-their-graves, dumbed-down glop.
Also, songs that have been covered by hundreds of artists - for instance, previously obscure or classic Blues songs done by Hard Rock/Metal/Heavy Blues bands, i.e. the Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Janis Joplin ("Ball & Chain"? Willie Mae 'Big Mama' Thornton, who also took ''Hound Dog'' to #1 on the R'n'B charts 3 years before Elvis), Led Zeppelin, Johnny Winter, Cream, George Thorogood, Savoy Brown, Johnny Lang, the Animals, the Who (Did you know that "Eyesight To The Blind", from "Tommy", is a Sonny Boy Williamson tune? Although Townshend may likely have first heard it as performed by Mose Allison), Mike Bloomfield, etc, as well as established Blues artists themselves, are, as good as the covers may be, far too numerous to track down and categorize. The same goes for the infinite array of 50's artists covering other 50's artists - Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and the Pelvis (in particular) covering everything they could get their hands on leap to mind...for all of those, I'll gladly let some other obssessive do the digging and cataloging of that motherlode. (Did you know that Fat's Domino's "I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday" is itself a cover version? Bobby Mitchell ,1957, that's who.) I'm not even going to attempt Jazz or C&W covers.
Some are inarguable; for instance, I'm not going to editorialize between Marvin Gaye's, Gladys Knight's, or Creedence Clearwater Revival's versions of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"; they're all too good to pick a definitive version. (The inverse applies to Quiet Riot's brain-dead bashing of Slade's "Cum On Feel The Noize". If you're gonna do a cover, bring something new to the table, alright?)
And, of course, in what is a big, fat, greasy chunk of Irony unknown and unappreciated by the great unwashed hordes that goosed it to Number One on November 22nd, 1971, Barry Manilow's "I Write The Songs".....wasn't written by him. It was composed by Bruce Johnston, a session man and part-time Beach Boy. Feel disgusted & manipulated yet?
